Freestyle+Commentary I listen to a lot of Mark Ronson, Wale, Cousin Cole, Catchdubs—I feel (strongly) that much of the creative process gets driven by an unspoken personal desire to reinvent how you express yourself, whether that be arrangements, lyrics, blends, etc. And it’s not so much fitting in with what’s already popular as it is pushing forward as a pioneer of the musical landscape to lay the groundwork for the music of the next generation. I write a lot. I create a lot. I believe in what will become of the hip-hop movement. So this week, I stepped out of my box and took a shot at freestyle. I’m not a rapper, and I won’t pretend to be one, but when it comes to expressing life in a series of rhymes, I’m up for the challenge. The story behind the lines comes mostly from the absurdity of navigating the L.A.’s mess—money rains, egos overflow, gaudy scenes at clubs intoxicate, front pages of US Weekly dominate, etc., etc. When you step out from behind the gates of its palatial estates to see what the rest of the world has to offer, you have to wonder, what does the city offer? The good life. The wrong life. What kind of life? Work hard.
Respect what you earn. Reach out to others. Life is not all about YOU. +M Video: Rock+Doc: About A Son: Kurt Cobain (Official Trailer) | Source: Sidetrack FilmsThe trailer looks tight. “The combination of Cobain’s narrative voice with the visuals has an eerie effect; you begin to feel that you are inside Cobain’s temporal memories-kicking aimlessly around the depressing cultural vacuum of a blue collar logging town, walking the halls of his high school, sleeping under a railroad bridge, sitting on a mattress on a crash pad floor and practicing guitar for hours on end.”
