Video: Kanye, “Good Life”

I could just as easily have written this in January, long before we all knew Kanye and 50 would be facing off this week. Kanye will oustsell 50. Here’s the superficical answer, and I don’t mean it doesn’t carry weight because it’s the only 100% certified answer—it’s just so obvious. Kanye has a grip on middle and upper class suburban teenage girls. If you’re in the music business (or any business in this case), it’s the one demographic you want to own. These are the “girls” who bought tens of millions of Britney and Christina records. They spend cash like they’re living in a hip-hop video. It took urban music decades to win them over, but now that they have, there’s no letting go. I wouldn’t say Kanye whips up meaner beats or drops iller lines, but he’s made a connection with the evolution of a revolution of mainstream lifestyle, and that’s invaluable. At the end of the day, and at the end of this week, it’ll put him on top. 50’s great at what he does, no doubt, and if I were putting together a hip-hop all-star team, I’d bat him ahead of Kanye. He stays true to who he is, and his music doesn’t crossover as nicely into the Top 40 format. Fewer spins, fewer pennies. Music desperately needs this week though and these two entrepreneurs. Love and respect +M

P.S. get a drift of these delicious joints fresh from Discobelle and Fader: Born Wit It f. B.O.B., “Stack My Paper Up” , Matt & Kim, “No More Long Years” (The Risk Remix), JAG, “Check Out My Swag”—speaking of samples, sample this.
